Lucknow, a beautiful capital city of Uttar Pradesh, a state in Northern India, is a popular cultural center, where literature, music and dance were developed, during the reign of rulers in the 18th and 19th centuries. Bara Imambara, also known as Asafi Imambara, is a colossal structure, built in 1784, by the fourth Nawab of Oudh, Asaf-ud-Daula. This famous monument of Lucknow , has historical, cultural and heritage background, including the large Asfi mosque, the Bhul-Bhulayah (the labyrinth) and a summer palace with running water.
Chota Imambara, or the Husainabad Imambara, was built between 1837 and 1842 by Mohammed Ali Shah. It is also known as the Palace of Lights, because of its chandeliers that come alive during the Muslim festival of Muharram. This monument contains many tombs, belonging to those of Mohammad Ali Shah and his family members. The main building is topped by a golden dome, which when illuminated during festivities, offers a splendid look. The interiors are decorated with gilded mirrors, colorful stucco, the King’s throne and ornate tazia or replicas of the tomb.
State Museum Lucknow, situated in a modern three-storied building at Banarasi Bagh, Lucknow, must not be missed while visiting Uttar Pradesh. It possesses separate galleries for sculptures, bronzes, paintings, natural history and anthropological specimens, coins, textiles and decorative arts.
The British Residency, is a famous historical landmark near Hazratganj area, which is the centre of the city. It is a group of buildings built in 1800 A.D by the Nawab of Oudh, Nawab Saadat Ali Khan. At present, it has turned into ruins and been declared as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. This monument was constructed as a residence for the British Resident General who was a representative in the court of Nawab.
There are many other tourist places, which complete the overall tourism in Lucknow and should be essentially included as a part of the Lucknow tours. The other places to visit in the city include Chattar manzil, Qaiser bagh palace, La Martiniere College, Sikandar Bagh, Rumi Darwaza and Aurangzeb’s mosque. |
