Lucknow City Lucknow, the capital of the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, India, located on the banks of the river Gomti, was founded by Nawaab Asaf-ud-Duala. During ancient days, Lucknow used to be the capital of the Nawabs of Awadh and so it is also called as the city of the Nawabs. The city has a great historical background. According to the legend, this name was sourced from Lucknau, and named after Lakshamana, brother of Shri Ram, of the famous epic Ramayana. Lucknow is said to be one of the most important centers of Muslim cultural influence in South Asia along with Delhi, Lahore and Hyderabad.
 
Lucknow, also known as the City of Nawabs, and being located in the Awadh region, is well known for its traditional cuisine, fine arts and the most courteous people in India. It is said that the Luknow culture is mostly inspired by the Mughal era and one may find a Mughalai feel in everything that is related to its culture.

Nowhere in Asia, would one ever find a city synonymous to the culinary. The food culture of Lucknow has no match.  One of the most favorites and served delicacy of Lucknow are Kababs. Few others are 'Tunda Kabob'. 'Kulcha-Nihari, Biryani, Paya and Halim. For the vegetarians, 'Malai Kofta' and 'Tehri' are the best options.

Shopping in Lucknow is a great experience. The city does not have many glittering malls and multiplexes, yet, shopping in the little marketplace and bargaining has its own different charm. The small shops and bazaars are filled with interesting buys, from clothes and jewelry to attars and birds. The chikankari work and Zardozi embroidery, either in fabric or clothes is a must buy.

Besides being, a great cultural and historical city, Lucknow is also a hub of education and research with many premier institutions. There are nearly six universities in Lucknow, an upcoming Sahara Hospital, Apollo Hospital and ERA's Lucknow Medical College; and management institutes like IIM Lucknow and Institute of Management Science at the University of Lucknow. Amity University is the number one private university of India also has a campus here.

Lucknow is a wonderful place and can be visited anytime throughout the year. It is well connected to almost all of the major cities of India, by air, road and rail.

By Air, Amausi Airport located, a domestic airport is connected to major cities of the country, such as Delhi, Mumbai and Varanasi.

By Rail, Lucknow Railway Station at Charbagh is the main railhead of the city.

By Road, UP roadways offers a good network of roads, highways and transport service to the city. Lucknow is connected to Delhi via NH24 and to Varanasi via NH56. Bhim Rao Ambedkar is the main bus terminal of the city, located in Alamb.
